A splendid Italian painting from the second half of the 17th century. Painting oil on canvas depicts Saint Roch, a celebrated French pilgrim and miracle worker. Invoked as a protector from the plague, he is most recognizable by the scallop shell pinned to his cloak, a symbol of pilgrimage.
The saint is depicted half-length, gazing upward in ecstasy, while his hands crossed on his chest express devotion and contemplation. This is a painting of remarkable quality, with the pictorial rendering highlighting the face and hands, painted with precision and intensity.
A painting of this kind, displayed in a studio, carries not only aesthetic value but also strong spiritual and symbolic content; the pilgrim becomes an image of each of our inner journeys. The painting features a small wooden wand, showing some signs of aging. The artwork has already been restored with relining, replacement of the stretcher, and restoration of the color in some areas. Overall, it is in good condition.
