Antique 17th-century Italian painting. Oil on canvas artwork depicting the Sermon of Saint John in the Desert, a much-loved subject in the Baroque era, as it combined the oratory power of the Baptist with the theatrical gestures of the listening masses. The scene is constructed around the figure of the Saint announcing the coming of the Messiah, while the composition is animated by a multitude of listeners of all ages and social classes.
A painting of remarkable pictorial quality; the delicacy of the faces and the rendering of the draperies suggest a late Mannerist artist from central Italy in the first half of the 17th century. A monumental artwork, ideal for a large reception room and perfect for collectors of high-period religious paintings.
20th-century frame in carved and gilded wood, beautifully decorated, with some signs of aging. The painting has already been restored with relining, replacement of the stretcher, and restoration of the color in some areas, but is in overall good condition. Internal dimensions: H 179 x W 156 cm.
