Antique 18th-century Italian painting. Oil on canvas, first canvas, artwork depicting a rural genre scene set in an idealized countryside landscape. The composition's focal point is the large watermill located along the river. The scene is enlivened by several figures in the foreground: two women and a man, dressed in peasant clothing, approach a fishmonger.
Meanwhile, a fisherman can be seen on the riverbank, while on the bridge, travelers on foot and on horseback prepare to cross. The composition is balanced and airy, constructed along a diagonal that draws the eye to the open landscape in the background, where a fortified village can be glimpsed. The sky occupies a significant portion of the canvas, and thanks to the aerial perspective technique, the scene gains surprising depth. The palette is clear and harmonious, with soft greens, warm ochres, and milky blues, while the light is diffused, creating a serene atmosphere.
A painting of remarkable pictorial quality, notable for its descriptive attention to naturalistic details and the characterization of the figures. The artist of this artwork is among the painters active in the Piedmont area in the mid-18th century. Especially in the Turin area, a landscape painting style had developed, strongly influenced by Flemish models, yet filtered through a more composed, orderly, and bourgeois sensibility.
A painting ideal for classic or contemporary settings, capable of lending depth and elegance to any space. The 20th-century frame, carved and gilded, is beautifully decorated, with some signs of aging. The painting has already been restored, with the stretcher replaced and small areas of color retouched, but is in overall good condition. Internal dimensions: H 114 x W 90.5 cm.
