French school painting, second half of the 18th century. Oil on canvas artwork depicting a highly refined pastoral scene. In the foreground, a young shepherd rests seated next to a log, surrounded by his flock of sheep and goats. In the center, a young girl approaches him with a wicker basket filled with herbs, offering him her left hand. Behind her, a splendid mule carries tools.

Pastoral scenes are a pictorial genre that spread throughout Europe and reached its peak during the Rococo period in France. Stylistically, given the subject matter, pictorial quality, and setting, this artwork can be traced back to the circle of Jean-Baptiste Huet (1745-1811). A highly talented artist specializing in pastoral scenes, he was influenced by Francois Boucher. (The painting is not currently accompanied by an expert opinion, but one can be requested upon payment of the relevant additional costs.)

The pleasing subject matter and the color palette, which plays on light and bright tones, lend great decorativeness to the painting, making it easily adaptable and suitable for display in a variety of settings. The 20th-century carved and gilded wooden frame shows some signs of aging. The painting has already been restored with re-lining, replacement of the stretcher, and repainting in small areas. Overall, it is in good condition. Interior dimensions: H 94 x W 88.5 cm.
