A magnificent Italian painting from the mid-18th century. This artwork oil on canvas depicts a broad landscape animated by peasant figures and grazing animals, set near a waterfall flowing from a cliff overlooked by rustic architecture. The composition is distinguished by its theatrical stagecraft: in the foreground, a young woman sits in conversation with a traveler, while beautifully painted cows and sheep stand just beyond. In the background, the narrative expands with additional groups of figures that animate the landscape, creating a highly effective atmospheric depth. The presence of the waterfall and architectural ruins introduces a picturesque element, in a quintessentially 18th-century style of capriccio naturale.
The artwork is attributed to the great painter Francesco Antoniani (1700-1775) due to its fusion of landscape and genre scene, its narrative vivacity, and its soft, diffused rendering of light. The brushstrokes are loose yet controlled, with particular attention to the rendering of animals and atmospheric transitions, distinctive elements of Northern landscape painting of the time (the painting is not currently accompanied by an expertise, but one can be requested upon payment of the relevant additional costs). From 1743, he worked for the House of Savoy, becoming a key figure in the decoration of Piedmontese royal residences. He was renowned for his landscapes, seascapes, and architectural capriccios, and his technique is characterized by lively brushstrokes and refined plays of light.
The painting is part of a pair (see photo and request the price of the companion piece if still available). A painting of great pictorial quality and rare elegance, ideal for refined spaces, professional studios, or state rooms. Stunning 19th-century frame in finely carved and gilded wood, with some signs of aging. The painting has already been restored with re-lining, replacement of the stretcher, and restoration of color in small areas. Overall, in good condition. Internal dimensions: H 89 x W 100.5 cm.
