A splendid Italian painting from the second half of the 19th century. Oil on canvas, artwork depicting a lively pastoral scene, of remarkable pictorial quality. Signed lower left (see photo), the painting is attributable to Filippo Palizzi (1818-1899), one of the leading exponents of 19th-century Neapolitan painting (the painting is not currently accompanied by a certificate, but one can be requested upon payment of the relevant additional costs). Palizzi revolutionized the genre by abandoning academic artifice to study nature directly from life, devoting an almost scientific attention to the observation of animals and the rural world.

The artwork draws on a famous Palizzi invention now held at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Milan. The painting depicts a donkey laden with fresh grass besieged by a herd of goats, while a little girl sitting on the hay watches the scene and a shepherd, in the background, steps in to guide the cattle. In this composition, the artist's focus is primarily on the behavior of the herd: the goats, animated by an irresistible urge toward the hay carried by the donkey, invade the scene, creating a powerful narrative interweaving of movements, postures, and color contrasts.

The painting is distinguished by its pleasing dynamism, the naturalistic rendering of the animals, and the bright, ironic character of the scene. Artwork of great decorative and collectible appeal, it is ideal for classical settings, country homes, professional studios, or elegant interiors. The painting has already been restored with relining, replacement of the stretcher, and repainting in small areas. Overall, it is in good condition.
