An important Italian painting from the second half of the 17th century. This artwork oil on canvas depicts Apollo playing the lyre, a refined representation of the god of music, poetry, and the arts, one of the most fascinating figures in classical mythology and a particularly popular subject in Baroque painting.
The young god is depicted half-length, delicately touching the strings of the lyre, an ancient instrument that is his main iconographic attribute. His face, characterized by an idealized, almost androgynous beauty, is framed by thick blond hair and turned upward in an expression of intense concentration.
The artist constructs the composition with great balance, making the figure emerge from the dark background through a skillful use of light. The soft glazes delicately model the complexion, lending a naturalistic effect to the chiaroscuro and highlighting the quality of the drawing. The nude is embellished with a refined pink silk drape that wraps around the hips, discreetly covering her nakedness. Beneath the lyre lies a sumptuous blue cloth, characterized by wide folds and vibrant light effects that lend depth to the composition.
Due to its pictorial quality and compositional elegance, the painting appears to be attributable to Tuscan painting from the second half of the 17th century. The softness of the features, the exquisite execution, and the refined use of light recall the figurative culture that developed in late-17th-century Florence, showing interesting affinities with the works of Onorio Marinari, Simone Pignoni, and Francesco Furini. However, current research does not allow for a more precise attribution (the painting is not currently accompanied by an expert opinion, but one can be requested upon payment of the relevant additional costs).
A work of rare elegance and strong decorative impact, ideal for important collections of old master paintings, professional studios, libraries, and reception spaces, whether classical or contemporary. The painting has already been restored with relining, replacement of the stretcher, and repainting in small areas. It shows some signs of aging, but is overall in good condition.
